Shanghai Museum

Round sky, square earth.
The Shanghai Museum specialises in ancient Chinese art and boasts some exceptional pieces in its collection of over 120,000 art works including antique bronzes, ceramics, paintings, calligraphies, coins, seals and Ming and Qing dynasty furniture.
The museum dates back to 1952 and has been installed in its current location in People's Square since 1996. The impressive collection of bronzes is on the ground floor of this surprising building with its square foundation surmounted by a round top, the form symbolizing the ancient Chinese perception of the world as "round sky, square earth".
